Certainly Pollyanna has a reputation for being overly sweet and good, but it was a pleasure to read this book aloud to my children, who were deeply in need of an introduction to the glad game. There is a lot that went over their heads, and they were both very upset that Pollyanna's recovery had no explanation and very little time in the novel. Otherwise, we all enjoyed this story and it was a good bedtime book.
What a wonderfully uplifting children's classic! I loved getting to know the characters and seeing the way Pollyanna touched each of their lives. While I strongly believe that their are healthy ways to work through negative emotions, I loved the theme of finding one's blessings no matter the situation. It was a sweet story.

Pollyanna is about the titular character, a vivacious and sweet little girl who is orphaned and adopted by her very reserved and stern Aunt Polly. At first it seems like a disaster, given their drastically different personalities, but Pollyanna, with her stubbornly positive disposition and penchant for flattery, slowly melts the cold heart of her aunt throughout the course of the book. Pollyanna works her magic on the entirety of the town in fact through what she calls the “glad game” in which one tries to find the silver lining to any situation, no matter how grim. At times the positivity reads as overbearing to my jaded millenial brain, and at times it leads to Pollyanna saying things that are absurd or even downright cruel (poor Ms. Snow.) It was fun to see how the frigid and hurting residents of the small Vermont town would react to Pollyanna's cheery babblings in any case.
Pollyanna herself was a fine character, just a child who says funny things and frequently gets herself into hot water for it. But my absolute favorite thing about this book was Aunt Polly who quickly became the hook that kept me reading. There's just something about a lonely, reserved woman with a cold exterior but kind heart that just gets me every time. With her terseness towards literally everyone and somewhat comically cruel decisions she made for Pollyanna early on, as well as how much Aunt Polly's own servant seemed to dislike her, I thought at first that she might be the villainous sort, somewhere between a Hannigan and a Trunchbull but more posh. I was both very wrong and pleasantly surprised.
The ending was whatever. I was really hoping that Aunt Polly wouldn't be forced to find romance, but the book screams in your face with a microphone that it's going to happen very early on as it talks about a mysterious ex lover of hers who still lived in town. I just wanted it to be enough for her to be happy to love and care for Pollyanna, but in the end that somehow required her getting married to the town doctor you barely get to know and who I certainly didn't care about.
Overall a fine book, short and sweet.

A cute little story! Kind of refreshing in this book society of paranormal stuff. My fav character was Ms. Polly because I felt that she grew the most throughout the whole story.
