so sorry

Such a disturbing and frustrating book. I could barely handle reading along without being able to reach out and try to shake some sense into the narrator. Reminds me very much of Dostoevsky and his more trailing sections of his novels.

Plunge into the psychic depths of a starving fantasist writer. The plot wanders aimlessly with the main character but the story does not want direction. Writing, people, pride, poverty, and -- of course -- hunger.

Kind of amazing that this debuted in 1890– the writing and style is very naturalistic and experimental, with biting inner monologue. A philosophical book with a lot to say. Excellent.
