This book was probably the most satisfying of the Phillip Marlowe books I have read thus far (this being my fourth). The plot takes the same twists and turns, and the mystery was good, with certain issues never being totally resolved. This was only part of the reason why it was so enjoyable though.
This book fleshed out Marlowe's character very well. The reader gets a sense of what his morality and worldview are, his disdain for various things, and his views on friendship, law and order, and justice. Rather than just having his sharp remarks and witty retorts, the reader also gets to understand a bit more of what disturbs and shakes up this seemingly unflappable protagonist. This books hints of what made Marlowe go from the District Attorney's office to being a private investigator some years ago.

It’s hard to rate these books because of the racism, homophobia, and misogyny. I still enjoy Chandler’s writing, but the bad parts are ingrained in it.
Aside from that, the problem with this book is that two characters, Lennox andWade, are almost the same guy: alcoholic, depressed, unpredictable men. The women are all sort of interchangeable too. Marlowe’s nobility is over the top as well, refusing money left and right despite having actually earned it.
I first read these books 40 or 50 years ago and loved them. This nostalgic revisit has taken a lot of the shine off.

Love this book!
My friend Nick gave it to me and I put off reading it for awhile but once I got started I could not put it down. The choice of words that Chandler uses really make the story come to life. I highly recommend this book.

It's Chandler, so of course it's going to be amazing. I didn't see the ending of this coming at all. I love his crazy noir descriptions. I wish I would have read this. I listened to the book and it was Elliot Gould narrating. He has a lovely voice, but not at all what I envision Phillip Marlowe as sounding.
