This book was so difficult for me to rate. I enjoyed it immensely, especially the cozy passages, and it made me feel like a child falling in love with adventure and fantasy all over again. It's written well, but is still simple and accessible, and one would read and write essays upon essays about the symbolism and real world connections and lessons. But, it has some really problematic themes and language that are difficult to look past, and is pretty conformist and sexist at times for no reason. Yes, it was written in the 1950s, but how much do we want to excuse? If I read this with my own children, how would we think critically about some of the things that happen in the stories, and some things the characters say and do? Would I let them read it on their own without that guidance? Should that weigh into my personal rating? So, I based my rating on a modified CAWPILE system, in an attempt to make it more objective; 3.75 for character, 5 for atmosphere, 5 for writing, 3.25 for plot, 3 for intrigue, 2.5 for logic, and 4.5 for enjoyment. A solid 3.85, which feels about right, so I've rounded up to a 4 here.
All of this said, I'm loving diving into all the movie adaptations (especially the cartoon from the 1960s, which I watched many times as a child), and will definitely be reading Neil Gaiman's "The Problem of Susan." Very very happy I read this.

This series took me 10 years to finish, because I started rereading it to my kids 7 years ago. I had to finish it finally so I listened to the he last book as an audiobook. What an epic. "A Boy and his horse" was the only one I found slow. A great story with lots of symbolism.
first read the Narnia books in this edition in 5th grade (at least, that's what i remember!)
