I listened to this being read on a stream, so it was an unconventional audiobook, and read alongside.
Gaskell's writing is really beautiful, and it's no different in this story - it was atmospheric, sufficiently creepy, and had wonderful characters (what little we get to see of them, at least). That said, the story itself seemed to have a lot of loose ends that didn't connect to the way the story ended. I don't know if it's just related to how older horror stories were put together, Gaskell not knowing how to deal with short stories, or just the result of it being so very short.
Still, if you're after a very short scare in an evening pick this up! It's less convoluted than some of the others in the collection, and more similar to something like The Woman in Black.

I am loving the Little Black Classics collection at the moment and "The Old Nurse's Story" was a pretty great one. I find it amazing how small books like this can be so full of essence and entering. Elizabeth Gaskell's story is a perfect read for October being a ghost story. In 50 pages I felt very thrilled and gripped by the mystery that surrounds the story. I don't want to go into any detail with the plot but I definitely recommend it for anyone who likes classic thrillers, in the style of Daphne du Maurier or Shirley Jackson.
The Old Nurse's Story is a really intriguing story. I adored Gaskell's style, she wrote in a really suspenseful way. For such a short story, Gaskell managed to come up with a cohesive plot as well as memorable characters. The other story in this book wasn't as interesting, I think - the narrator wasn't quite as engaging and his story wasn't as engaging.
Two atmospheric gothic thrillers, with creepy twists on well-loved stories.
Ghastly, spooky, charming and curious!
The first of the two stories is a very effective ghost story, so full of mystery and vivid images. It being a short story it is all wrapped up in very few words but still manages to be quite powerful.
The second one is a bit awkward at first, until I picked up on the names of the people at the party, and then it became quite charming.
