The new short volume I have doesn’t exist on here so guess I’m listing this one, will read the second story. No idea what was going on in the second story.

There fow writers with whom we fall in love by reading a few lines of their writings...Elizabeth Gaskell one of these few writer!!

I had this intuition that I will like this one..and yes!!! As always my intuition said correctly...I not only liked the story but fall in love.

Not very easy not too complicated yet beautifully crafted writing with appropriate description just transported me to the very place where all the story took place, by proving the statement that a reader can easily travel as many places as he/she want with only a book.....

Also, I have officially become the gothic stories fan..looking forward to read her stories. Recommendations for her other works and other gothic stories, novels are most welcome.

A classic Elizabeth Gaskell ghost story that's perfect for a Christmas read. When the 18-year-old nurse Hester and her charge Miss Rosamond arrive at Furnivall Manor they find that their new, grand home, comes with some spooky secrets. Hester finds herself wondering who plays the great, broken organ in the hall every time it storms, and what supernatural being or force is endangering her beloved charge. The story takes a bit of time to build up, with the beginning really focused on lengthy descriptions of the house, but the climax is effective. The ultimate reveal is pretty dramatic, although I was a bit confused about the old lord's involvement in the family drama. This particular Haunted Bookshelf edition contains some nice, stark black-and-white drawings by Seth, but also a few typos and an ongoing confusion over whether the kitchen servant's name is Bessy or Bossy (I did find this issue in another edition too, so it may have been a faithful reproduction of the original).

I reread this story for a readalong I'm doing this month but meh... I just don't enjoy Elizabeth Gaskell. The ending of this story bugs me too. How can there be a ghost of a person when the living person is also there in the room? I don't know... she's just not my cup o'tea.
