This book is fun- the descriptions of Rory’s transformations and childhood flashbacks were really engaging. I mean it’s cool to picture a werewolf book based in a city that is plucked out of any city in the US. However, the characters are kind of mid. Rory is a fun narrator but her jokes were often just too cringy. The dialogue and some prose, at times, read more akin to something written by a new fan fiction writer. But could I put the book down? Not really.
Graphic: Child abuse, Sexual assault, Violence, Blood, Vomit, Pregnancy
Moderate: Gore, Car accident
Minor: Infidelity
I’m so glad to have rounded out spooky szn reading with this book. I can’t pin point it but something about Rachel Harrison’s writing just works perfectly for me. (This was even somehow better than Cackle IMO!)
I also didn’t expect to get emotional over a “horror” book, but I loved the parallels of the plot & themes of rage and trauma. In the authors note, she states she read The Body Keeps the Score in preparation for writing this novel, which definitely comes through.
I read this in one evening and highly recommend it as a perfectly fast paced October read.
