I haven't read a character as annoying as Arabella in years. And this is coming from somebody who usually enjoys selfish and sort-of-annoying characters. But this one just had no redeeming qualities and whenever she popped up she made reading this book almost unbearable. Other characters, the banter, the romance, and the style were mostly okay, although the plot seemed to be reduced to follow this bratty character around for no reason.

- it's a fun story about figuring out one's sexuality in absurd circumstances and not quite historically accurate times
- a bit infuriating because communication would solve the whole plot, but it's also kinda the point and a character flaw that's being addressed
but I don't like that there don't seem to be any consequences for Belle?? Running away because you don't want to marry is one thing, but being a pathological liar and trying to get someone harmless killed (multiple times) is something else entirely. Like, she is actually insane and the most unlikable fictional person to me in recent memory - the last few chapters I became less invested and just waited for it to finally end tbh (which did happen pretty quickly, so I can mostly forgive that)

Alexis Hall’s writing is gorgeous and this book is hilarious at times, but it is literally Valentine being bullied and gaslighted by all the other characters for 350 pages. I’m so furious on his behalf, and I hated everyone else— even the characters I liked/would have liked otherwise, like Bonny and Peggy.
that was cuteeeee. VERY silly but so cute. i wish valentine wasn’t SO brutish at times it was a little too caricature-y but what can you do

Everyone except Valentine were some of the most annoying characters I’ve ever come across
