Behind Closed Doors

It's bonkers mesmerizing to listen to, a really fun audiobook, but it's utterly ridiculous.

To be fair, a little ridiculous is a good thing, so this is a lofty 2.5, but I just...can't make myself round up. I just can't. It's too ridiculous. Sure, I blazed through the audiobook in a train-wreck-mesmerizing-sort-of-way, but the cutesy hideous way she used her Downs character was too weird to feel respectful, and the villain was one mustache short of a twirl who can predict literally everything she'll do no matter how mundane or inane it is, and the main character is SO DUMB. BAG OF BRICKS. EVERY TIME HE SMILED AT HER SHE FELL BACK IN LOVE.

She decided to go for a trip to Thailand instead of choosing to see her sister, who had just fallen and broken her leg and was in the hospital. And that's before he's even revealed the levels of his creepness.

For being so bleak it felt utterly sanitized, safe for daytime television (except for the dog scene. dog lovers will have to shut their eyes).

Entertaining enough for the silliest of beach reads, and that's about it. An utterly forgettable palate cleanser between your bigger reads.

4/5 stars

this book broke me in the best way. i went in expecting a typical thriller, but what i got was a horrifying look at control, silence, and survival.
i felt every moment of grace’s fear and frustration. watching her be so isolated, so unheard, was absolutely gut-wrenching. i wanted to scream for her.

jack is one of the most disturbing characters i’ve ever read. the way he hides behind charm while doing the unthinkable made my skin crawl. and once his backstory is revealed?? i genuinely felt sick. he needed help, but instead he chose cruelty.

what kept me going was grace’s strength—and millie. sweet, lovable, perfect millie. the way grace fought not just for herself, but for her sister, made this story hit so much deeper. and when things finally started shifting at the end? i was crying. esther showing up and actually seeing grace for the first time had me in tears.

the pacing dragged a little in parts, but honestly, the emotional weight made it all worth it. that ending? perfect. haunting. powerful. i’m going to be thinking about this one for a long time.

This domestic thriller was both gripping and chilling. I couldn't put it down.

Jack was distinct and well crafted, the perfect villain. You absolutely hate him throughout. Although the amount of influence he had and the notoriety of his cases at times didn't seem fully plausible and the actions of some of the bystanders didn't always feel realistic, you really felt the depth of Grace's desperation and isolation. This book kept you as a reader on edge and without giving anything away I enjoyed the ending and who/how she was rescued.

I think some of the ideas were quite original and Grace seemed quite complex. There were times she didn't make the best judgment calls, but she was a really likeable character and you were really moved by her plight.

This was quite twisty and like any great thriller a lot of seeds were planted that later made sense and bore fruit. The writing was great and accessible, it didn't feel overly complicated and was really easy to read and follow.

The book was very intriguing at the beginning, but then lost me.
The writing, the plot, the ending - nope.

It may have been that I was in the right mood, but I listened to this in one sitting. I enjoyed hating the villain and the way things unfolded. Made for an entertaining afternoon.
