Sadie

4.1 AVERAGE

Written from two perspectives, one from Sadie, the sister of a 13 yr old murdered girl from a small town in Colorado, and a journalist narrating a podcast. Much like Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, there were lots of twists and turns and unknowns to figure out to keep the reader interested. Some complex characters and complicated backgrounds and some very sad reality of child sexual abuse.

Satisfying tale, told both through the title character's perspective and a serialized podcast, about a young woman seeking revenge on her younger sister's killer. Ending was more open-ended than I usually like, but there are some decent hints about what happened. Very effective as an audio book.

The audio book specifically for this one was phenomenal. I highly recommend experiencing it that way. Honestly, I still think about this book frequently--especially the ending.

First, I wish this book came with a little bit of a warning about the potentially triggering details around sexual assault on children because it was a tough read as a victim myself but completely worth it if you can work through it

I was bawling at the end and I love the love story between Sadie and Mattie and how there are so many layers of redemption, empowerment, forgiveness, and many other themes throughout the story.

Sadie is a hero.

She’s my hero and I’m sure she’s a hero for many other young girls and also boys who went through similar situations. In the process of avenging her sister’s death by taking on an all too familiar monster, I think she validated and avenged the pain in many readers as well and I was very happy to have read this book.

Wow. This audiobook adds so much to the story. The podcast sections, which in print form just looks like a script, are full cast recordings in the audiobook. I can't imagine listening to it without the portions from Sadie's perspective, though... where would that leave us? In the end, in the same place, I suppose... but I loved the cat-and-mouse of hearing Sadie's narration, then West McCray's attempts to find answers and follow her. The content is pretty heartbreaking and upsetting, but the book is so very well done.

I don’t have a lot to say other than with each successive book, Courtney Summers impresses me even more than I already was. She just gets what it was like to be a teenager, and she has incredible empathy for her characters. Sadie is a sad, tough read - sad because you know kids out there live this same kind of life and won’t get the same kind of recognition for what they go through.

4.5 Stars

Wow, what an emotional ride. This book was so hard hitting, the trigger warnings are definitely not to be taken lightly.

This is one of those books that, the audio version, it's just superb. An absolutely amazing book to listen to, the full cast and adherence to minute details just elevates this audiobook above so many others out there. Really, I cannot rave enough about how good it was.

The story itself was interesting in how it was told through both duel time-lines and formats. My only real complaint would be that I got a little bit lost during the podcast chapters in terms of who was talking and when, hence my reliance on the audiobook there. That might be more to do with my dislike of reading script formatted things then any general confusion about this though.

That ending though, as much as it made me want to scream, I really appreciated the harsh reality of it and the underlying truth. It just made the story hit even harder and I think it was well chosen by Summers.

Man this book was powerful and gripping. It tackles some very difficult subjects and I think the way the author decided to use different perspectives is what drove such a captivating story. It’s hard to read but I definitely recommend reading it. You become entranced by this radio show and with following Sadie and you just want to know more.

I personally would love to a sequel to this story and I hope Courtney Summers might write one.

Overall a great and powerful read.
