This was a very honest and very sad book. I was expecting it to be a funny memoir, and while it does have funny parts, it is essentially a heartfelt and heartbreaking story of a music critic who has lost the woman he loves. The chapters are separated based on the mix-tapes he was listening to as the events were occurring through the late 80s and 90s. Rob Sheffield is a great story teller, so even though the story was sda, it was a great read.

Love can mean different things to different people. And I don't really know much about 90s music...doesn't feel like I'm missing out, either.

i ADORED this book. beautifully written, funny, sad & eye-opening. if you love music & love being a human, you’ll love this book. tw for grief, obviously, but this book was stunning. the ONLY problem i had with it was a few sentences where he was describing women sat weird with me. other than that, i absolutely loved it and recommend :’)

I loved this - it's a love letter (or rather, a mixed tape) to Charlottesville, a city I know and love. It's also heartbreaking, and makes me want to snuggle up close to those I love...and maybe make a mix tape.

This is a book that my best friend had been hounding me to read for months and when I finally did, I was so mad at myself for waiting so long...it was that good. It's a sweet journey of melancholy, love and loss all tied together with the best music...half of which most people are too embarrassed to say they loved in the 90s. A charming and tear-jerking novel that proudly sits in my list of top 10 books of all time.

A bit of a mess, overall. Often unfocused, an example of the perils of stream of consciousness.

But it gets four stars from me for the simple and honest romantic outpourings, made more difficult by being so far away from my significant other. It's alright to have it go off the rails occasionally when it's so heartfelt.
