The easiest 5 stars that I gave this year so far.

This book has some of my favourite things to read about: love, nostalgia and music. However, it also explores sadness and loss coming from the death of a loved one, but Rob Sheffield writes about all of this in the most amazing way while introducing us to some of the greatest songs of all the time. It’s a journey through space and time, fulfilled with passion and music.

I’m from a different generation than Rob. I was born in the era of cds and grew up to see the mp4 scene and the spotify era growing inside me. Times change, but music stays and so do mixes- now in a different form in our timeless playlists in digital gadgets. I loved way too many quotes in this book but I’m going to leave this incredibly special one: “When we die, we will turn into songs, and we will hear each other and remember each other.”

Words cannot express how much I loved this book.

This was an easy and fun read until it wasn't and things went serious. Although he mentioned his wife dying earlier in the book the moment it happened caught me off guard. I can't even imagine how he must have felt.

This memoir from a young widower is a heartbreaking tale of love and grief. In addition to enjoying his sweet memories of his wife, who died suddenly at age 30, and crying with his sorrow, I felt the book helped me understand better how to respond to someone who is grieving.

I liked the concept of the book but felt that as someone who isn't familiar with the music mentioned here, it just didn't speak to me as much as it could have.

Is this a five star read. No.
Is this a five star read on a personal level. Yes

A sweet and sad book, that left me thinking about my own connection between music and life events.

This book is heartbreaking and lovely and funny and full of '90s magic. Fellow mix-tapers of days past, you must read this.
