James Gould-Bourn

When Danny’s wife suddenly dies in a car accident, he becomes a single father to their now-mute, 11-year-old son, Will, + ends up losing his job. Determined to pay his rent within 2 months or face violence from his landlord, Danny decides to pursue a…beary different career path.

Bear Necessity, as its name may suggest, is full of puns + dad jokes of the cringiest quality. While Gould-Bourn is a very descriptive writer + his sentences flow effortlessly, the entire story was just one cliché after another. I struggled to form any kind of attachment to the characters as they were all very shallow, not in behavior but in description, personality and in the storyline itself. While I found certain parts of Bear Necessity to be slightly funny, I didn’t find it to be a comedy. It had a feel-good quality to it that can be a bit of a relief after reading some hard-hitting, heavy, dark novels, but overall it’s just very…thin.

As a side note, I couldn’t help but picture El Magnifico as a cross between Dick Dastardly + Robbie Rotten (from Lazy Town).

Described as humorous this reveals itself as a relatable story of love and character. It is totally charming and  arranged to detail each character with enough livery to help us see and feel who they are but focussed so those details don’t take us away from this beautiful story of love. I’m so glad I read this.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.

WOW!! I loved this book so so much! A father does his best to help himself and his son move forward after the death of his wife. His son hasn't spoken since the accident that took his mother's life over a year previously. There is a rich cast of characters and I laughed out loud so many times! The story is heartwarming, and funny, and just so wonderfully told. This will definitely be an author to watch!

Great feel good entertainment. It was like a cross between Silver Linings Playbook and The Full Monty.
