Winsome. Charming. Delightful. All of these describe Rebecca. I am sad that it is finished, but I know that I will be reading this gem again.

OMG, I thought E.M. Montgomery was precious, but I hadn't tangled with Kate Douglas Wiggin, Queen of the TWEE. Forgive me for saying this, but this book practically gave me a toothache.

However, precocious Rebecca Randall is too similar to Anne Shirley for me to dislike her. In fact, reading this book is like meeting someone who is similar to someone you really like. It's cool, but kind of weird when you notice the small, glaring differences between them. K.D. Wiggin as narrator just loves on Rebecca too too much. She's always saying how beautiful she is, how wonderful and amazing. It's kind of creepy.

And what's with the implied romance between R.R.R. and A.L.? Again, creepy.

I can't find a place in my heart for this, but I can sympathize with those who have.

It's been a trip re-reading as an adult. I'm a little disturbed by how much I related to Rebecca when I was a kid. May elaborate when I'm not on a phone.

I know I read this many times as a child and liked it a lot, although I don't think it was one of my absolute favorites. The only thing I could remember about it was the incident with the wet paint that is on the cover of my copy. So I decided to reread it and well, it didn't really hold up. It started out fine, but then could not hold my interest. Even reading it didn't really bring back memories, the way rereading Heidi did recently. It was cloying, and I didn't really love Rebecca. The parts with Adam Ladd were downright creepy in a way I didn't notice as a child. I didn't have the pleasure of reading Anne of Green Gables as a child, but remedied that as an adult, and it is a far superior book. Maybe that colored this reread? Anne feels like what Rebecca tries to be.

Mother/daughter book club - January

Wow, of a group of 7 middle school girls, not a single one got through the book. Many of them didn't make it past page 20. They just didn't like it.

Only the parent leading the discussion was able to finish it. I guess this isn't the genre for our group. We've been meeting since 3rd grade (4 years now) and this is the first book that none of the girls read.

This was very similar to [book:Anne of Green Gables|8127] (surprisingly so), although I liked the Anne series a bit better. I know Anne was written after Rebecca and was clearly influenced by it, but I just think the Anne series is better written. I enjoyed this story though also and I was glad I read it. :)
