It’s a shadow of Anne of Green Gables and is absolutely missing something that makes Anne so fantastic. I can’t quite put my finger on it because they did have a lot of comparable content, it must just come down to the authors. I didn’t feel the same lifting of the spirit as I do when reading Anne. I found myself uninterested and wanting to give up multiple times. I kept putting it down and looking to see how much was left. I just didn’t connect with this one.

Like many others, I noticed the similarities between this book and Anne of Green Gables, but I don't think this one was written quite as well in some ways. This book had some beautiful imagery as we were exposed to the fanciful world that Rebecca lived in compared to those around her. However, sometimes we were told what happened instead of shown, which prevents the reader feeling truly immersed in the book. I adored the relationships that Rebecca had with the Cobbs and her Aunt Jane, but I wish that we had gotten better descriptions of the moments that they shared, and that she shared with others like her best friend Emma Jane so that I could feel the power of their ties more strongly while reading.
Also, the inclusion of the Mr. Aladdin as a future potential love interest who met Rebecca at 10 when he was 30 or 40 sours the book as a whole, and is rather unnecessary since Rebecca has no interest towards romance (mostly) throughout the whole book.
Plus the ending wraps up in a slightly lacking way, where the reader could have benefited from witnessing the final interaction between Rebecca and her aunt before we get those final thoughts about looking towards the future. Plus we never get to see what this bright young lady really wants to do with hers.

I bought this book at a booksale for 50 cents and have re-read it hundreds of times. It's an easy read, perfect for elementary schoolers but still holds up for those who are older. It does a good job of imparting values without feeling overwhelmingly preachy for 8-10 year olds. I'm sure as one gets older it becomes a bit more over the top but I've never been one to get caught up in such things.

Moderate: Adult/minor relationship, Racism
Minor: Child abuse
There’s a character limit now so I’ll make this quicker than I’d like it to be
I liked this book, it was a charming quiet read that was fun and spunky. BUT. And this is a major but. There’s pedophillia mixed in??? And it’s romanticized?? So that’s not cool
It was a fun book, but it should have been better

I don't know why I never read this book as a child, but lucky for me a friend demanded I read it immediately when she found out I hadn't.
I'm someone who is immensely fond of children's literature, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was utterly charming and familiar, even though I'd never read it before. While the plot was nothing unexpected, Rebecca was a wonderful heroine, and her adventures and friends reminded me of Anne Shirley. Rebecca seemed a bit more serious, and her character growth sprang from determination and hard work on her own part. Rebecca is the kind of character other authors try to emulate unsuccessfully.
I think my only complaint with this book is that Adam Ladd and Rebecca never come to any kind of agreement with each other at the end of the book. My romantic's heart demanded a more traditionally romantic ending, but alas.
