A tragedy as told by the victorious villains.

I remember writing a paper on this in university. My professor was really great about exploring the social context of the book. Like the subtle themes that suddenly become very not-very-subtle at the end of the story.

???????

i don't get it, like i truly do not understand

first of all, herman melville I BEG YOU to use way fewer commas and shorten your sentences because i am not able to follow you. i truly had forgotten the beginning of a sentence by the end, it was terrible. i'm sure it's not just because of that but i really could not contain any plot points in my mind, i do not know what has happened. i don't think i truly understood what was going on or why, and the sentence structure really didn't help.

and then also. just why exactly does this book exist? i've read that some critics apparently call this anti-racism, but all i see is racism and slavery and no one doing anything against it? like i know that you can talk about these topics but then challenge these ideas. nothing about this book challenged racism? i don't get it.

oh, okay there's one positive thing i suppose. the formatting is quite clever. with the deposition at the end, it makes for a nice reflective story. it would be easier to understand every single nuance of the interactions between the various characters if i would reread the whole thing with the knowledge of the ending, but then i'd have to go through the terrible process of reading this boring text once again. so that's not happening.

i hated every single second of it.

book 12 for my explorations in literature class

Didn't like it. It's just that simple. I read a little bit of "The Good Captain" by Jay Bushman, which was based on "Benito Cereno" & I enjoyed "The Good Captain" much more than "Benito Cereno." Now I see why this text has basically been forgotten.
