Read for school.
Mm... bof
I wasn't thrilled by this reading contrary to Bartleby which I much more enjoyed.
Too many descriptions that made it really uneasy to read.
Thoug I admit the interest of this novella. Melville succeeded in his task with suspense to me. I didnt expect the ending until I reached it. And the histoical aspect was fascinating too but I would have prefered it to be a bit more entertaining.

I didn't enjoy this quite as much as my favourite Melville ([b:Bartleby the Scrivener|114230|Bartleby the Scrivener|Herman Melville|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1320404048l/114230._SX50_.jpg|15956900]), probably because it is such a deeply ambiguous and uncomfortable narrative, presented as it is largely through the lens of a humane but inherently racist narrator. Let's call it 'squirmingly good'.
An interesting mystery with a surprise ending. This short novel is a snapshot of black/white relations in the 19th century, focused on a slave ship and the "rescuers" who happen upon it.
