The majority of this book is explaining the new situation the world is in regarding the new “special meat.” Nothing really happens. Because the concept is so revolting, it does keep you reading as it gets morally worse and worse with regards to how people are managing life after “The Transition.” However, some parts of the story feel like they serve no purpose and didn’t ever wrap up.
What was the deal with him and Spanel? I did like how it leads you to believe he will be a morally superior character and perhaps derail the special meat system but ultimately remains using it for his gain.  *edit* after doing more reading on the book and realizing it’s not really about cannibalism but about him wanting a child, everything makes more sense.

This is my third read through and first review of Tender is the Flesh. I absolutely love this book. There are a lot of dark topics - awareness of the CW beforehand is advisable - this won’t be for everyone.

What I love so much about this book is hard to put into words. At its core, Tender is the Flesh explores how systems of oppression strip us of our humanity, normalize violence and turn human beings into another consumable, another form of capital. I could easily write an entire essay using this story as an allegory for modern Capitalism.

Augustina Bazterrica does a splendid job of building tension throughout the book, leading to a surprise ending that will make the reader’s head explode a wee bit. In total, this book will make you think. The main character is relatable. The other characters and their interactions with the main character offer insights into our own complacencies. Be prepared for a rollercoaster: being grossed out, angry, turned on, disgusted, and - in the end, introspective. I definitely recommend this to anyone who can stomach the content.

It was the most graphic book I've read so far. I with they talked about the transition more. Like how the world became what it is now. Overall, eventhough it was a short read, it was a very interesting and eye opening experience.

A dark dystopia that feels similar to Do androids dream of electric sheep, not only In its poise but also the key socio-political themes and humanity (or lack therof)

I loved this read, and finished it in the latter half of an evening, and though parts made my squirm I think it could have lent more into the 'horror' and gore side of things. Saying that, the long-standing impact of certain still linger, so perhaps the at times restricted horror worked better than I thought.

Side note
Having not eaten meat since I was very, very little, it perhaps didn't have the same impact and implicit guilt associated, but trust me, this book is a must-read 🥩

an experience that changes a person, but I feel like you can get the same message out of other sources and not get traumatized in the process. do not touch if you have a sensitive stomach.
