I give this book a low 4 stars. There were parts that I enjoyed and other parts that I couldn't care less about, and I thought the book was dragging.

Is it better to be free and annihilate ourselves, or is it better to be kept alive and stripped of some of our basic purpose? At least in the latter scenario we would still exist. But is that enough, to just exist? Butler succeeds in asking the hard questions, putting us in the mind of someone forced to straddle the lines of two species in contention.
Also, while reading this in 2025, the Human Contradiction is showing in full force. When our hierarchical tendencies overpower intelligence, this is what we get.

I'm a big fan of Octavia E. Butlers writing and absolutely loved book one. As always, her writing style absolutely entranced me.
However, I didn't love this book as much as book one. It felt more like a bridge between books one and three instead of a work that could stand on its own. Additionally, we very much discussed the same issues and topics as in book one, just within a more character rather than an action driven setting. I personally didn't find that we learned a lot of new things that we didn't already get out of book one.

Really liked the book. Would say it was a bit predictable but still interesting.
