What a fabulous book.
This has the feel of the very best Michael Morpurgo stories. There's a wonderful message, but it's not so obvious that kids will put the book down in disgust. April is a brilliant character, brave, determined and knows her own mind. Bear, as a character, is great too. I cried at the end. (That keeps happening lately! Maybe I need to pick different types of books?)
My copy sadly didn't have the illustrations included, apart from one or two samples, but it's enough to see that they're going to be amazing. I can't wait to see the whole thing, and I'll update this at that point.
This is going to be an amazing book, a great seller, and it absolutely deserves it.

Kids who like stories about children with special connections to animals will love THE LAST BEAR. It's not very realistic, but it's still a sweet story about a girl's bond with a stray, lonely polar bear. The tale has a dreamlike quality that makes it feel timeless and old-fashioned. Still, the focus on climate change and humans' responsibility to the earth give it a contemporary focus. THE LAST BEAR is a quick read with simple prose, but it's got enough action to keep it interesting. I didn't love this one, but I liked it well enough. If I could, I would give it 3 1/2 stars; since I can't, I rounded up.

I think that this book is a nice way to put both adventure and facts of polar bears into a story; a fantastic book for 9-12 year old that might want to read a fictional book including many facts about the Arctic and its inhabitants.

the amount of tears I have shed while reading this book is unreasonable
This book is beautiful and atmospheric and fantastical (because we all know a girl isn’t actually going to befriend a wild, starving bear) and also very sad. I loved it

I think this would be a great novel for kiddos in the middle grades to read, especially if they are learning about environmentalism. However, it was too simple and not as relatable to me as an adult.
