Още щом видях “Последната мечка” на Хана Голд знаех, че това ще е “моята” книга. Не само, че изданието е прелестно, но и става въпрос за приятелството между момиченце и бяла мечка!
Винаги съм обичала животните и обожавам истории за животни. На колкото и години да стана, все ще се впечатлявам от мили романи за приятелството между хора и животни.
И действително обикнах “Последната мечка” още от първите страници. Ейприл е на 11 години, когато на баща й е предложена работа за 6 месеца в метеорологичната станция на Мечия остров – малък безлюден остров на север от Норвегия. Макар и да носи това име, на острова се смята, че не е останала нито една мечка. А работата там е от изключително значение – трябва да се измерват промените в климата, за да се прецени глобалното затопляне и евентуалните щети от него.
Това не е място за малко момиче, но Ейприл отива с удоволствие. Тя не само, че обича да е сред природата, но и се надява, че така ще може да прекарва повече време с татко си. Действителността е друга обаче и на Ейприл й се налага да прекарва дълги часове сама, разучавайки острова. Тъкмо така открива Мечо – самотен и ранен бял мечок, останал на острова незнайно как и незабелязан от никого досега.
Момичето винаги е умеело да се разбира с животните и с мечока бързо създават силна връзка. Двамата прекарват всеки ден заедно и изучават всяко кътче от острова. Но мястото на мечока не е на това място, на което дори храна трудно се намира. И Ейприл ще направи всичко по силите си, за да го отведе от там, каквото и да й коства това.
“Последната мечка” действително е роман, написан с огромна любов към природата и с мисъл за съдбата на белите мечки, чиито хабитат буквално се топи. Той е и роман-призив да се замислим за бъдещето и за нещата, които можем да направим, за да помогнем на мястото, на което всички ние живеем – планетата Земя.

I really enjoyed this debut novel. It was sweet in the same way [b:Pax|22098550|Pax|Sara Pennypacker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1434493048l/22098550._SX50_.jpg|41443759] is. I enjoyed the friendship April had with Bear and I especially liked that Bear didn't talk (it is always jarring when animal friends can talk to only one specific human who becomes their friend). I struggled in some areas, where I felt scene transitions could be smoother and I also longed for more backstory on April. Nonetheless, this was a quick read and has a strong (sometimes too heavy handed) message about doing one thing to save the planet.
The artwork is GORGEOUS. I can't wait to see it in the finished copy!

I’ve just sobbed through the last few chapters of this incredible book. A beautiful story that really hits home about the effects of global warming while warming the heart through the friendship of a young girl and a polar bear. It’s going to take me a while to recover from this one
April’s father’s job takes him to a remote Arctic outpost for six months and April has no choice but to follow him there. He tells her there are no polar bears left out on Bear Island, but one night April meets Bear, starving, alone and needing to return back to the other bears.
I love stories involving animal friendship and I really enjoyed reading The Last Bear. This was a tale with a message at its heart; climate change and the way that we as humans are destroying the planet for the animals. The rising temperatures have left Bear alone on Bear Island, having been stranded. Whilst this message was central to the story, other themes of family and friendship were also important. There’s a wintery sense of magic in this story and the friendship between April and Bear. A very easy and enjoyable read.
April, the main character, is fiercely independent, but so desperately in need of a friend. Bear provides her that friend and relationship that she has been searching for. The partnership of the two and development of their bond was integral to the story and there were some real heart wrenching moments between the two. April’s father was too tied up in his work to realise how alone his daughter was and see this burgeoning friendship with a polar bear, of all things. His growth and development through the story is equally important to read.
An easy and accessible read with a central message that is integral to saving our planet. 5 out of 5 stars.

This is such a beautiful story of a lonely young girl, April, travelling to Bear Island with her father and how she befriends a polar bear before attempting to return him to the ice caps of Svalbard. The artwork that is shown throughout the book is beautifully drawn/painted (cannot tell.)
