This is a beautiful children's book. It is perfectly pitched and an emotional experience. I can't give it 5 stars because I struggled a little with the relationship between girl and bear, it was too realistic to be fake and too fake to be real and sort of hit a weird uncanny valley. But the relationship between daughter and father was brilliantly written.

Such a beautiful, heart warming story that examines the very real impact of the climate crisis but in a way that isn’t heavy handed. The friendship between April and Bear is so joyful.

April Wood leads a slightly unconventional life compared to other 11-year-old girls. When her father's research work takes them both to the remote Arctic outpost of Bear Island, she is told that there are no polar bears left there. But while out exploring, April comes face to face with a solitary polar bear, injured, starving and far from home. As April wins over Bear's trust and an unlikely bond forms between them, she manages to piece together his story and is determined to help him return home.

This was such a beautifully put together middle grade story: an exploration of grief and loss, a touching tale of a girl's connection with a wild animal and, above all, an eye-opening call to pay attention to what's happening to the planet. Your heart will go out to both April and Bear, the former struggling to win the affection of her only remaining parent, the latter in pain from having been separated from the rest of his kind. Without being preachy in any way, the book educates the readers on how our actions collectively harm wildlife and damage the environment in ways we don't even think of.

Interspersed throughout the book are also stunning and detailed black and white illustrations.
