Wow. What a brilliant read. So poignant and on the nose it hurt. And I'm not even talking about the bear. A really realistic look at family and what happens when someone is living, but "isn't there". April's journey and her need for love got me right in the heart. She also annoyed me to no end, because HOW MUCH DANGER CAN ONE GIRL PUT HERSELF IN???
Gold is a fantastic and lyrical writer, but her style in no way detracted from the pace of the story. In fact, a lot of her beautiful imagery drived April's motivation forward. She's been added to my "must-buy" authors.

A fantastic and heartwarming story about the unlikely friendship between a little girl and the gigantic polar bear she is trying to rescue. A story with great and likable characters, no real villain and a real heart to it. I don't really have any qualms with it, it's just a solid and wholesome story. My edition also had beautiful illustrations, definitely a nice bonus.

It is my day on The Last Bear Book Tour and I am so excited. Go and buy this book; children, YA or adult lovers alike. To simply call this a book is an insult in my opinion, as this is a masterpiece, a work of art that should be read by all. I always have my favourite reads of the year, but this book is easily one of my favourite reads of all time. This is an emotional and heartwarming tale of a polar bear, and one girls battle to protect him. It is spellbinding, breathtaking and heartbreaking, and completely incomparable to anything I have read before.
You can’t help but love April from the outset. Her independence, fierce loyalty and persistence is heartwarming and inspirational, with her love for Bear just beautiful to read. Her spirit is so powerful to read, and she is just one of the many reasons why this book needs to be read by all. And I also just want to say that to have a character such as Bear who never says a word, who uses his emotions and actions to communicate and express his past and his own story was truly remarkable. To write so effectively that the bond between April and Bear is almost tangible is a credit to Hannah Gold as an author. Bear does not say a word, but it is through this silence that he says everything. He has left a paw print mark on my heart for sure. I was an emotional wreck by the end of this book!
I don’t think I can review this book without mentioning the illustrations. They were amazing! These illustrations were so detailed and really helped immerse you in the story. Paired with the vivid descriptions, you really did feel as though you were on Bear Island with April and Bear.
I have so many words to say about this book, but none of them seem quite sufficient. Absolutely incredible. A story of grief, a love so powerful it can be felt by all, and standing up and fighting for what you know to be right.
All I can say to Hannah Gold is thank you. Thank you for sharing this truly unforgettable story with us all.
