Exhilarating read. Never a dull moment. I absolutely love the way Bardugo executes a plan right under our noses.

There was so much going on in this book - arguably too much going on - but I did stay up until 1am on a work night to finish it, so it was definitely a gripping story. I think Leigh Bardugo is really successful in writing characters who are easy to root for despite (or maybe because of) being a little bit morally gray. Her characters are smart and interesting and her worlds are very creative. I think at times, this world was a little too big for her to fully get her arms around it. Some of the peripheral characters and plot lines didn't really resolve and I think she felt the need to introduce new/more/bigger magic from the first, which at times made it feel a little unwieldy (and not unwieldy as a plot device, but unwieldy as in she didn't have a good explanation for why things did or didn't work).

A warning: this is not the final book in the series, and I don't think the third book has been announced yet. This was pretty devastating news for me to discover at 1 in the morning.

Definitely picked up in the second half and I really liked the final chapter, but took a long time to pick up after the first book. It kind of makes sense why later on into the book, but it was a lot of set up to only feel the payoff from it in the last 100 or so pages.
