There was a lot about it that I liked. But the major downside was Penny. Her character was inconsistent to me. When she was away from her mother, I really liked her a lot. But with her mother, it was like she's a 14 year old. And she's 24. It annoyed the piss out of me that a 24 year old would allow her mother to treat her like that. It also seriously undercut her character. She's brilliant on the fly in chaotic situations, but get her around her mother and she's a fumbling, moronic child.

Also, I like Emery but my patience for his emo shit will be very, very thin. We have yet to see any reason why this guy thinks he's a bad guy. But he just insists on it. I was rolling my eyes by the end.

The story was amazing. I loved how Penny found her strength and how intuition is such a strong power.
But I absolutely hated the nickname Emery gave Penny and I really hope, it goes away in future books

Okay, I thought for sure I was going to hate Penny, but really, this next arc is just delightful. I'm so pleased to have discovered K.F. Breene!

Fascinating fantasy with magic and corruption

This seemed almost like a coming of age story. There was an innocent light romance. The way the magical reality functions is pretty broken because of the mages, mostly. Enter two heroes who have both had losses because of the organization. This was quirky, action, packed, and even cute (in a good way!). I am getting the next book asap.

This is my first book into the DDVN world and it wasn't a bad experience. It was light and fast-paced, so it kept me interested. I wasn't a huge fan of Penny or Emery. Breene had a lovely take on magic and how it operates, but Penny and Emery went from 0 to 100 very quickly. There was no real build up in their relationship, just that pull of them naturally fitting together. Also, Penny's inability to curse was annoying. I understand it was supposed to be endearing, but it just went too far sometimes. Between Penny and Reagan, Reagan definitely wins in terms of bad assery and being more likable overall.

The story was fun to read when it got going, but it's soooooooooooooooooooooo slow. The whole thing felt like a really long beginning to a story that only kind of got started.

Alright

Ok, so I liked this - but I didn’t love it. While set in the same world as other ddvn books, it doesn’t quite hold up next to Reagan’s story, even though it’s book 4 in the series. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but disjointed and somewhat scattered. Still going to read the next one though, lol!!

Solid book

This was a solid book in the series. It really helped explain Penny, her origins, and what happened between certain parts of Reagan’s story.

I always love the creative swearing and Penny is no exception to this. She’s funny and kind. She’s a great character to read about. I hope we see Emery come around and get full closure to their story. Maybe even see a new dual mage pair. I hope you’ll give this book a read. Happy reading y’all!
