Outstanding treatment of this subject. He successfully accomplished his goal of coming at this both from the philosophical angle as well as that of a pastor. I chose to read this as an ebook borrowed from the public library, thinking I did not need another book on my shelf dealing with this age old topic. I think I will still buy a hard copy as there is too much here I will want to return to.

A must read for all who suffer. Keller knows how to speak to the heart and the intellect at once. And he speaks to them in ways that move you to action. I am so thankful God has gifted this man in ways that are a direct benefit to me - this book included.

It took me two years to finish this book because I kept getting distracted by other books and it was quite meaty in the content, history, and theology. It’s richness is why I give it 5 stars though. It was filled with just enough history, context, and religious comparison to be like a miniature college class as well as just enough personal stories and applications to feel like listening to a sermon. That’s why I love Tim Keller’s books. It‘s like attending a sermon that is part preaching and part college lecture. I really appreciate the details, stories, and references Keller used in this. It’s a book that I know I’ll have to keep coming back to and relearning the same truths of how Christians should endure suffering better than anyone because of how God redeems it, uses it, and our future hope. Definitely fitting to read when contemplating the sad state of the world or the specific trials in our own life. It really fits any occasion of suffering and the book felt more like two books than one. The first half was the history part and the second was the application. He recommends to skip the history section if you are currently experiencing deep suffering because your mind state won’t be able to process the history/philosophy as well.

I tried, in the words of Marcel Duchamp, to "force myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste.” I really tried to avoid giving this five stars because I think Keller gets an easy pass from me sometimes. But the book is biblically and philosophically sound, emotionally profound, and always gospel-centered.

I found the opening chapter presenting the different cultures of suffering to be particularly illuminating.

This book is probably the best I have ever read concerning pain and suffering. I found it personally very helpful. Timothy Keller is so gifted with words and reasoning. He takes a very difficult subject and is able to bring it into a succinct focus. It's good to read when you're in the midst of pain or suffering, but even better to be proactive and read it when life is easier.
