hot take: this is my favorite book out of the series.
childhood trauma is hard to write, and obviously very hard to experience. the blend between modernizing classic mythos with humanizing fictional characters makes this book charming! that's the best word to describe this series. 'ancient' myths were created by humans, for other humans, so seeing them as a huge untouchable monolith negates everything that stories were meant to be: shared. having greek mythos (and later roman) available to the current generations reminds us that humans 'back then' are not much different than the humans now. we will always laugh, gasp, and cry exactly when we think we do.
for specifcs, luke breaks my heart and so does his mother and hermes' relationship. such real, terrible, family dynamics for a story about gods and dragons. the childhood sacrifice that is made in this is covered in so much love and empathy. percy never 'hardens'. he never goes cold. he is a child, fighting an adult battle. and he wants to cry! he's tired! he misses his mom! i think, as a culture, we got so carried away with YA heroes being tough as nails and shell-shocked, that we forget how young everyone is. anyway. my logan lerman crush is never going away and cabin 6 forever <3
