Vuong is a master of creating realistic characters that are complex, yet relatable. Although I enjoyed the book, it just had too many elements and there were several plot points that never developed. Emperor of Gladness was not as good as his debut novel, but he still provided a fresh perspective on the themes of chosen family and redemption.

Absolutely powerful novel. It shows just how much there is in what is often thought of as mundane life. How much every life matters and impacts people. How dreams no matter how "small" matter. Every life is important and worth talking about. Brought me to tears
