What makes this novel strong is the interweaving of Haitian religious beliefs into the narrator’s introduction to America. There is lovely Harrison’s American Thanksgiving entwined with racism and the other ills of U.S. cities. Also there are lovely little interludes from the other characters’ POVs. I want to read more by this writer.

I loved this book. The main character is completely engaging--she is fragile and strong, confused and determined. You want her to survive and come out on top. The backdrop of Detroit was different than what you usually encounter, but showing the similarities and differences between it and Haiti was mesmerizing. There was some mystical realism in the book, but it only added to the story instead of confusing it. Highly recommended.

I read this book for school, but it was actually pretty good. I'm super glad that more and more books we get to read for school, especially summer reading, are ones that actually teach us important things, and are books that are actually published, you know, in the 21st century.

thought the story is very impactful and one that should be told, i felt that it read a little immature.
the characters where kinda childish.

Very evocative and powerful. The ending is absolutely amazing. I couldn't stop listening to it. The audiobook has a great narrator.
