I found this one hard to listen to. I think I knew some of the ending before it began. Somehow the book felt sad to me from the get go. I know it's the reality, but I think I'm in a place where I should have read something more hopeful.

I did though enjoy the audio book. The voices were beautiful and varied. They felt authentic. I love the accents. The reading of it was a beautiful thing to behold.

I also enjoyed how the sisters were so very different and yet would do anything for one another, and their cousin too. They never really said the aunt had, so far as I can tell, but they clearly wanted to do anything they could to make her life better.

There is love, we just sometimes have to look harder for it.

Am immersive, captivating story about a young girl born in America who returns here from her home in Haiti at 16, combining both an immigrant story with an exploration of the complexities of the American Dream for those in poor, urban areas without a lot of options. Highly recommended - I especially enjoyed the audiobook. Here's my full review:

A beautiful multilayered story. Full of grit, emotion and authenticity. Character driven with a thread of magical realism throughout. A reminder to always remember who you are and to keep hope inside you

I enjoyed reading this book. Fabiola’s story and separation from her mom was heartbreaking. It was beautiful to see her point of view and how her life changes in America. How not everything is as it seems or what she expected. I didn’t know how this story was going to end and how or if Fabiola was going to see her mom again. Even at the end I still feel like I want more, a few more chapters. So many unanswered questions but thats probably part of the beauty of the writing.

I'm very angry and I'm very sad. I'm angry I didn't see this coming. I'm sad because this book hurt. I'm really sick and tired of reading about black trauma. Quick personal rant: I don't have an issue with the author writing this story; I'm just sick of publishers of acquiring the same thing. Almost 5 years after this book is published and it's still rare to find black boy/girl joy books :(

No one talk to me for the next year. Goodbye.

This was a difficult read in that I know people have lived Fabiola’s life—a chance to come to the US, separation from a parent, having to navigate a new country in a crowded home you barely know (the home or the people). Navigating school, friendship, first love, all with an undercurrent of violence and drugs. Zoboi does an excellent job of making it possible to experience life as Fab does.

Okay, so, I really need a sequel to this! I both love and hate when you unexpectedly fall in love with a character only to have your world shattered by the end of the story. I'm totally heartbroken over the ending but wish I would've read/listened to this a lot sooner.
