About the Book: A strange device, mere crystal shard in appearance, created by powerful, yet evil creatures, which then destroyed them. Having gained sentience, it tempts and pits people against one another in search for the best, most powerful wielder. What would happen after remains to be seen, as two deadliest assassins suddenly find themselves ensnared by it.

My Opinion: Amazing character development whilst remaining true to their origins. Two deadly warriors, sellswords, killers, against each other, yet together against the world, all whilst wrestling the shard’s power. Very well folded and written story, full of various insights, familiar characters, and great lore. Every previous book, even the most boring one, was worth reading to get to this point.

Superb fantasy account of the anti-heroes Artemis Entreri & Jarlaxle the Drow's escapades on the surface. I picked this up from a Hostel in Hawaii six years ago and have been a keen reader of Salvatore since. Not to everyone's tastes, but a gripping fantasy yarn who's plotlines and themes run deeper than they may seem.

Again without Drizzt, again a decent tale. It didn’t have the human-interest aspect like SotW did, but it wasn’t bad. Artemis remains stubbornly unwilling to change his ways, and I came to like Jarlaxle’s observations of Entreri in this novel – perhaps knowing this is what becomes of the two of them will make LotD better the next time I read it. I liked how it wrapped things up with Crenshinibon (again Salvatore revisits a previous location like Haphaestus’ cave without revisiting plot, so the whole story seems unbroken and natural), and how it concludes the whole thing with Entreri and Jarlaxle without a cliffhanger, so that a reader who is interested in Drizzt can continue without feeling like he’s missing something if he doesn’t read The Sellswords, which I have no interest in looking at. It was a good conclusion to this part of the story of Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle, satisfying and complete.

The very ending to this is good. You see some cool growth from some characters if you've been reading the other books in the series.

Not up to RA Salvatore's usual standards
