Northanger Abbey

Jane Austen

3.83 AVERAGE

I forgot to log when I started this story. It was rather uninteresting and predictable. I would much rather read Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen would address the reader directly from time to time which was unexpectedly different, but I don’t think I will care to read Northanger Abbey again.

I liked it! It’s pretty clear that this is her first book though, it was really good but a bit more childish than other Austen books

3.5 stars – Better the second time around
On my second read of Northanger Abbey, I found myself appreciating it more than I did the first time. While still not my favourite Austen, it’s certainly risen above Mansfield Park in my ranking.
The novel plays with gothic tropes in a tongue-in-cheek way, but I don’t think it quite hits the mark. The “mystery” elements feel a bit too light-handed, and the satire doesn’t always land. The Thorpes were extremely irritating, and poor Catherine—so naïve and easily swayed—remained a bit frustrating throughout. That said, I now see more charm and humour in the narrative than I remembered.
