A sweet, hilarious little book that had me constantly laughing out loud. Catherine is so sweet and dumb in an endearing way, Henry Tilney is the easiest to like of any Austen hero, and the whole book relishes in making fun of its characters relentlessly.
It would have been a 5 star if it had stuck the landing, but unfortunately this book is the most extreme example of Austen’s worst tendency- at the end, once all the tension is built and you’ve hit the climax, she stops actually writing and just throws in a summary of what happens to resolve everything in a few pages. It’s frustratingly unsatisfying.

A fun little satire on Gothic literature which is part Regency romance, part mystery, if that’s the right word to describe it.
I love Catherine – she was such a normal and relatable girl, and spent a lot of her time fretting and worrying which is an absolute vibe. Love seeing the representation of anxious overthinking girlies who have a penchant for Gothic ghostly mysteries.
Henry was so precious and pure too. I really admire Austen’s deep and interesting characters who always surprise you. Her portrayal of female friendships and the complexities of it is so good to read as well.

Such a sassy and fun little novel! I had read Austen again at some point, not willingly though so the experience was different . Her wording and the structure of her sentences was weird and it took me a while to get into it, plus I had some issues with the vocabulary but I managed. I was surprised by the 4th wall breaking by Austen, she did it frequently to comment on things, it was interesting. Overall the book gave me the feeling that I was reading a tale and it was suspiring that I actually enjoyed as much as I did.
I separated the book in 3 parts. In the first part we get the introduction of the lovely and sweet heroine Catherine, a country girl who lives in a village with her family and we follow her on her first adventure in Bath, her social outing. The Bath part was basically people who didn't work, with plenty of free times in their hands gossiping, reading, talking, going to balls, strolls and watch theatre. Every day, all day. There was some good commentary by Austen in this part.
In Bath is where we meet Isabella(and her family that I forgot the last name)
The second part is the adventure on Northanger Abbey! Northanger abbey had a mysterious, darker, thrilling, kind of gothic and heavier element which I really liked. The characters we follow are more interesting(Tilney family), the conversations between those characters are deeper and our heroine by the end of this travel is more mature, oh and we also see more of her internal thoughts. This is the part that Catherine sees the true nature of Isabella.
Then it was the last part of the novel, the ending. A sweet happy ending with some reality mixed in.
Overall I had fun, I needed something light to read and I am glad I bought the book. I bought it mainly because of the cover and Austen's name that became viral the last few years but in this case I am glad that I didn't judge a book by the blurb and it's theme in this case, because if I did I don't think I would have bought it. If I am being honest, I don't think I will read it again, at least not in the next 5 years or so but still I had a good time.
