It's been a long journey but good news, I finally made it to the eeeend.
I find it fascinating how this book crosses the traditional borders between reality and fiction. I think the idea ofa character finding a book about himself that's also (partly) the one the reader is reading is brilliant. For this reason this novel made me really really excited at the beginning, unfortunately the rest of it, and especially the ending, didn't really meet my expectations (although I still think it deserves solid 4 starts for how enjoyable it was to read and a number of other factors).
I have mixed feelings about the language use. I would definitely describe the author's style as creative but sometimes it was just a bit too creative for me. Sometimes I just really wanted the narrator to speak "normally" but I had an impression that they tried too hard to sound cool and come up with metaphors that were ✨not like the other metaphors✨. I don't know if anyone understands what I mean because it's quite hard to explain. It all bothered me at the beginning but then not that much.
For me the weakest part of this book was that there wasn't really a single story to follow. I mean there was but it all seemed like events connected with each other without forming something I could describe as logical. For most of the book, Zachary just went from one place to another, found notes, solved riddles, talked with people, etc., but what I missed was some bigger goal that he would try to achieve that would put it all together. On the other hand, I feel like such disconnectedness was partly the point of the author. The creation of the world was strongly oneiric and dreams are just like this, strange and chaotic. This kind of storytelling wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the fact that it made me feel like there was no single message this book tried to convey. I had a strong impression that it mostly focused on the "vibe" side, leaving the "message" part quite unclear. I'm not saying that it's bad and for sure there are many readers who would love it but it's not really what I'm looking for in literature. Another thing that annoyed me was that the parts actually adding some deepness to it all felt so pathetic. All the talking about time, fate, stories and so on made the philosophy of this book feel a bit empty and very unspecific.
I won't write a lot about the characters, I'd just say they could be deeper. I'm also not a fan of the relationship between Zachary and Dorian because they fell in love knowing nothing about each other, lol, and it didn't really seem to change at any point of the novel.
I now realized it looks like I really hated this book but I swear I didn't, I actually really enjoyed reading it, I just don't know what else I can say about its positive aspects, it was just funny and nice and comforting, exactly what I needed right now👍🏻👍🏻 okay dat was het, dankje wel to anyone who read it until the end

I was incredibly excited to read this, figuring it would easily be a strong 4-5 star. How wrong I was. It was soooo disappointing and painful.
The first 250 pages were 5 star for me. Fantastic. The descriptive passages were extensive although were apt at creating this magical underground world. I was fully drawn in, enjoying the poetic nature of the passages.
Then the last 250 pages hit. 1 star.
The repetitive repetitive repetitive boring nature of the second half was agonizing. I wouldn't be surprised if numerous pages from the first half were inserted into the latter pages. Nothing new enough happened. The story fell completely flat. Again there was more page after page of the same exact descriptions. Repetitive. It was painful, boring, pointless......I wanted it to end so badly. I didn't care for the characters anymore....they were doing the same things with no development really. I mean, there was some storyline sort of at the end but it was not engaging.
The editors should have dropped 150-200 pages of this novel. What a mess in the end.
