Beautifully written and immersive. Wonderful use of multiple stories/legends and perspectives. However, the plot and characters fall flat. Also, the author begins with a magical realism/we-are-never-really-going-to-get-all-our-questions-answered-but-it’s-going-to-be-poetic-and-beautiful-and-somehow-still-satisfying style but ends in just fantasy, and not well executed fantasy.

I do not know what Erin Morgenstern was on when she wrote this book. but I'll have what she's having
dark emotional slow-paced

Vibes like Piranesi and Seanan McGuire’s In An Absent Dream. Too complex for an audiobook for me.

A elaborate, delicate weaving that feels like it should be overburdened by it’s motifs but never is. Beautiful note to wrap up the year.

I listened to this and was so in love with the whole thing. However, after 18+ hours of listening, the end was a bit of a whirlwind and didn’t wrap up, which I guess is part of the philosophical point of a story in a story that never ends, but still a little disappointing and why I didn’t give it 5 stars.

Ok, there were some good ideas in this huge mess. For example, finding yourself in a story- fascinating, I think. But good lord, this thing would never end! I’m happy to be finished! This author has a weird and vivid imagination and writes quite descriptively, but after a while I just didn’t care.

quite literally my favorite book ever i can and will reread this book again and again forever and ever

at her book signing in seattle, morgenstern described her writing as "realistic magic", and the starless sea as a book about stories. and that is exactly what it is. the starless sea is a book about stories, for people who love stories and yearn to disappear into other worlds. in the same fashion as the night circus, i suspect it'll take me a couple of re-reads to truly understand the genius-ness of this book, and the many stories it entails. i was initially worried that i wouldn't love this as much as i loved the night circus, but if anything, i think i love it even more. i loved the way we got to see snippets of certain characters and their stories told in different ways, and how all these stories were interwoven and intertwined. i loved the way we got to learn so much about zachary and all the other characters, and the thorough descriptions - i truly felt like i was there with them all.
