The Starless Sea

This one was on my shelf for quite a while and I decided to finally pick it up. The prose in this book was beautiful and I enjoyed the snippets of myths and fairytales in the first half of the book. I kind of enjoyed Zachary's character, but I was not overly connected to him and did not feel his personality and character was developed enough.

Now I'm not slow or simple at all, but this book confused the hell put of me. I know it was written in prose in a way that implied deeper meanings and was a fantasy world. But I did not get that at all. For most of the book, I had no fucking clue what was going on. It was so confusing. But I kept on because I thought it may all come together and start to make sense. That didn't happen. As was even more clueless by the end and felt that the ending did not wrap everything up at all.

Overall, whilst the writing was beautiful and I finished the book, I did not necessarily enjoy it.

“We are all stardust and stories.”

If I could give this book 100 stars, I would.

I haven’t wanted to be a part of a story so badly since first reading Harry Potter. I’m now not only homesick for Hogwarts, but also the Harbor on the Starless Sea.

This book was so beautifully and masterfully written. It is extremely rare that I want to re-read something right after finishing it, but I think I could read this book a thousand times and never get bored. The plot was so intricate and detailed and each story wove so well into the other.

“...no story ever truly ends as long as it is told.”

This book was a perfect mix of whimsy, curiosity, and mystery; stories within a story of many stories! For any reader with a soft spot for literary mints and warm pastries, the underground library is an absolute dream!

The true stars were all the short stories from Sweet Sorrows, Fables and Fortunes, and The Ballad of Eleanor and Simon.
My favorite was the story of the Sun and the Moon, and how it quietly came together for the Moon and the innkeeper.

It was a 3.5-star read for me. The honey-dripping, languid pace and the eventual unfolding of the main story felt a little underwhelming. Still, for those who cherish stories and the quiet magic of hidden worlds, this book offers a rare kind of wonder.

I absolutely loved The Night Circus, I still recommend it to anyone who's willing to listen. With that said, I was looking forward to Morgenstern's new book, but tried to maintain my expectations because you never know what the next book will be like.

I really enjoyed the first 100-200 pages, it is beautifully written, the world-building is amazing. I was really curious about what would end up happening, because surely this would all culminate into something even more amazing in the end.

I probably got to about the halfway point of the book and started wondering what I was waiting for, who's the big baddie? What is the goal? Where IS this all leading me to?

As I kept reading, I did feel like, while the stories here and there were interesting and magical, I still wasn't sure what I was waiting for, and I kept waiting, and waiting?

By the time I reached the last 100 pages, I felt like I was lost and waiting and that maybe I had missed something? I understood that things were picking up towards the end, there were a lot of things happening, but I probably felt as lost as the characters did, in the words, in time, etc. (That could also be seen as really good writing, because the author succeeded in losing me in the words and time too! Ha...)

Again, it is a beautifully written book, but I think I might just go and reread The Night Circus again. I would still read Erin Morgenstern's next book though.

Also - if you're a teacher, some of the short stories woven into this book and the world-building would be really great to use as examples of descriptive writing and figurative language.
