Reading this book was... both a privilege and a struggle. Let me elaborate.
Based on the name of the book and Erin Morgenstern's other works I expected a magical and adventurous tale full of fantasies and great storytelling. In this sense I was far from disappointed. The way Morgenstern describes the setting and the characters is so ethereal and I wish I could say things like that about my life and my experiences. As a book lover I felt so deeply understood by this ode to stories and freedom of creativity. Especially this one quote really stood out to me:
'Strange isn't it? To love a book. When the words on the pages become so precious that they feel like part of your own history because they are. It's nice to finally have someone read stories I know so intimately.'
I've read this passage countless of times because I have never related to something this much ever in my life. Reading books is part of who I am as a person, thus making every book I''ve ever read part of me as well. I carry with me almost 18 years worth of stories. 18 years worth of lifetimes written on paper, as created by one imaginative mind. To read something this is like being praised for listening to these stories. For making sure they remain with us for all of eternity, never truly forgotten. As long as there's always someone to tell them.
However as beautiful as this book is, it is not the most exciting one out there. I spent most of the time in confusion at what was happening, since nothing was explained. There isn't really a plot and the person who is supposed to be the antagonist doesn't do that much. I still don't know what the goal of all this was. Maybe it was just an ode to storytelling, but if that were the case it certainly didn't have to be almost 500 pages long. There was also the confusion of multiple stories happening at once. We have the main storyline (of Zachary) and then five different side storylines that had something to do with the main one but since everything was told along each other it was just too much at once. So what I'm saying is that for the amount of pages the book has barely anything happened, but at the same time there were so many storylines mixed together that it was difficult to see the things that DID happen.
Overall I did enjoy reading this book. The confusion I had also gave a sense of mystery and curiosity, but I still wish this book actually had a plot. That's why I'm only giving it 3 stars (I considered giving only 2) The writing is what really got to me so if you're into that this really is a book for you. Otherwise if you think the plot is of the utmost importance then I'd advise you to maybe look for a different book to read.

A solid book. They could've definitely done more but what they did was also enough. This world was very interesting to get to see. Maybe a prequel book is in our future? If so I would love to read it. I would really like to know how this other came about in more detail and just how many others there have been. Again a sucker for multiple stories being interwoven and there being multiple perspectives. I really hope we get to visit this world again but if not the book stands alone very well.
Reading this book reminded me why I love reading, which is pretty much the highest compliment I can give and something I haven't fully felt in a while. An achingly beautiful ode to the power of stories and to every reader and storyteller our there - if telling stories is your lifeblood, your world, the foundation of who you are, this book was written for you.
