Very rarely do I find a book that makes me sob all through the final chapter - both out of deep love for the characters as well as deep sorrow that I was leaving them and their world behind. The entire novel is a love letter to stories, both their birth and their continuation, as well as the people who keep them alive. Morgenstern manages to create a dreamy, mystical, unbelievable world that for all its impossibilities manages to feel intimate and familiar. Perhaps what makes me saddest is that I will never get an opportunity to read it for the first time ever again….which, in my opinion, is a very special way for any book to make you feel.
Immediately it felt too silly despite high stakes cutting your tongue out, or another you get killed if you don't "choose that path" - maybe the overall story is worth it if I kept reading but I don't think this one is for me.

Erin Morgenstern the Queen of what I am now calling "Dark Whimsy".
The story of The Starless Sea is fantastical and magical in a way that is reminiscent of Alice and Wonderland, but much less like a fairytale.
There's a darkness to this story and this world that makes it more suitable for adults. As well as the story being incredibly intricate and the connections between the different story elements being very impressive.
Yet despite all that praise, I can't say that I loved this book. And I'd say that the whimsical element that makes Morgenstern's writing so unique, is personally for me also the downfall of this book.
Because by the end of it, I kinda felt like "what did I just read". After all these nearly 500 pages I felt like there was no point to this story, to everything that happened with all these characters. It all just felt like I had experienced a story which was missing part of its plot.
This book is an experience to read and the creativity is off the chart. But after a while I just felt kind of lost within its pages. Never knowing where we were going to go or what the point was. And the fact none of that got resolved in the end made me feel let down by the overall story.
I do think I would be willing to try another story by Erin Morgenstern. After all I really did like The Night Circus. But this story and I didn't really click. I like my whimsy, but I need it to be connected to an actual plot, and not replace it.

So originally I didn't think I was going to like this book. It has this weird kind of pretentious storytelling that I usually find really off putting, but I kept with it and I'm really glad I did because I ended up really liking it. I still don't like how the pace of the book is constantly being interrupted by smaller stories, myths and legends and the like, but those stories were just SO GOOD that I couldn't be mad for long. This book gave me so many shivers it was crazy.
I think too that everything ended up working so well because it was just so achingly sincere. You can feel how much Morgenstern loves books and reading and stories with every sentence she writes and none of it is ironic or cynical or anything. It's a weird and strange book but I liked it and I'm glad I read it.

I found this difficult to review, it was good but also confusing but also how do you rate about a book about a book with not much of a plot?
