I'm not sure how I feel about this book. Any dark humor that was in it went well over my head so that the story was just dark. Caging Skies is like a horror novel written from the point of view of the monster, but the monster is human, and sometimes those are the worst kind.

Observations and certain lines were eloquently rendered, but at the same time, I found myself so horrified by the protagonist and his rationalizations that some portions were hard to read. My reactions ranged from being intrigued by the character study the author presented to becoming positively appalled by the character himself.

The story does not arc upward toward a path of redemption; rather it spirals downward into the selfishness of evil. It was a hard book to read.

This book centers an abusive, delusional Nazi as a main character. The story would’ve been far better if told from Elsa’s perspective. Not worth reading.

This book is nothing like the film! No dark humour, no YA themes just an ugly narrative that doesn’t really go anywhere.

When I think about why I liked this book, I don't have many good reasons. The main character is manipulative, abusive, and passive aggressive. But it shows what a society based around purety of race ain character feels infallible because he's Aryan) and brainwashing could lead to in it's young people, which I think is a valuable lesson to learn.

This book may not be for everyone, but I couldn't put it down. I thought it was very well written.

Tbh, I'm here because of JoJo Rabbit.

The book surprised me by going four years beyond the war, where the film stopped at the end of WWII. For all the film was grave and the humour dark, this book was even more so.

A good read, but not what I was expecting. More psychological, less innocent, no Taika Waititi Hitlerisms.
