Highly enjoyable. The dueling narratives mesh much better in this one and it doesn’t suffer from the same pacing issues as the first book. I also enjoy the new cast quite a bit.
My only real issue is that there are mechanisms in place, both in the narrative and the world building, that kept tension pretty low throughout. I felt slightly cheated by obvious fake-outs a couple times.
Still, looking forward to Book 3!

This one was weird...the narration style just didn't work this time. Last time there was the central "how did we get here" that made the past okay but here ...it didn't feel as urgent and there were more breaks with the conversation in between that made it easier to put down more often rather than needing to keep going.

The storytelling format reminded me of the Kingkiller Chronicles, and I really enjoyed it.
This DNF really hurts after The Ruin of Kings delivered on so many levels! But The Name of All Things had so many issues for me personally, where to begin.
1. I’m taken out of the plot and world and characters I invested time and effort in to understand from book 1, to then be introduced to new plot threads, a different area of the world and different characters, WITH NOTHING THE SAME.
2. I am taken away from ALL the characters I connected to in book 1, literally all (Kihrin doesn’t count). The characters introduced here I have no reason to care or route for. The main protagonist in this book we meet in book one, but barely. But by book 2, i’m meant to care to immediately attach to her backstory? There’s no reason to attach to her beyond “she might be cool”.
3. Time. We don’t progress in time from book 1 to 2, so I’m reading a series that feels stagnant, stuck. I made it to the end of book 1, I got somewhere, the plot was MOVING. I’m then thrown straight back to the beginning and follow the exact timeline of book 1 just with different characters. Oh the frustration!
4. The horse comparisons are never ending.
5. Even if my favourite character reappeared (likely in this series will how things work), no one character should be the reason I try and read on, when he’s not one of the main ones, I checked! But what a villainous character Darzin was!
