I usually don't like books about video games, but Erebos creates a world, draws you in, and holds you until the end. Really enjoyable!

Another book I pre-read for my 12 yr old daugther. I'm not really a computer gamer (well, not the fighting adventure game type) but I could understand the addiction that this sort of game could cause, especially in teen agers. The secrecy and excitement of the game, and the spill over into the highly charged world of high school is realistic and exciting. There is real suspense, action and a good resolution. Some descent into romance and possibly just a few too many characters - it's too hard to care about everyone that Poznanski brings up - but I think this will appeal to my daughter.

This book is getting lots of buzz...but I couldn't finish it. Plus I left it in Utah (maybe on purpose) so now its in a different state, that makes it extra hard to get it read.

Summary: Nick Dunmore and his classmate's are part of a secret computer game. They each have received the small package containing a DVD and an ominous message. Don't let anyone know you have it, don't tell anyone about it, and play it alone. The game Erebos starts off as an adventure/fantasy role playing game. However, it quickly morphs into something more sinister. It knows about it's players both in the game and outside of it in their daily lives. It's almost like it's watching your every move and reading your mind. When the game starts asking its players to do dangerous and sometimes illegal missions in real life, the players must decide how far they are willing to go to keep playing. The lines between reality and the virtual world start to blur until Nick is asked to do a dangerous mission. Will he do the right thing or will he give in to the game?

Comments: This book has been sitting on my shelf for 3 months. I received a review copy from the Publisher and was only a little bit intrigued by the premise. I figured it was more of a book for gamers than regular readers. While some of that view applies it is so much more. It took me a few chapters to get hooked on the idea of the book. Nick is not a likable character. He is a bully and his attitude only worsens when he gets addicted to the game. However, he was refreshingly real. He is very much a character that many can identify with. When he is given a task that is beyond his morals he refuses and gets kicked out of the game. He then embarks on a mission to find out who or what is really controlling the world of Erebos. This is a fast paced and very addicting read. The book is very heavy on the gameplay and is similar to many of the popular RP games on the market. Teens who like RP games will definitely like this book. It also has enough mystery and intrigue for non-gamers to keep them interested. It is not your average cookie cutter book that most YA novels get stuck in. It will appeal to those looking for something outside the box of vampires, werewolves, princesses and dystopian fantasy.

Good points: Shows how addictive gaming can become. Realistic characters that don't all have happy neat little endings. Excellent descriptions of the game itself and how it works. I found myself wanting to play. (Well, until it asked me to do something illegal!)

Issues: This is translated from German so I think a few things get lost along the way. The first chapter seems stilted and mixes American with British terminology. The story takes place in London and the mixed references were a bit annoying. Flat's vs. Apartments etc .. It was not enough to ruin the book but better editing would have cleared this up. Another thing that was frustrating was that some of the missions that other characters did came with no consequences. One student was falsely accused of sexual assault and that was never resolved. Some of the things Nick does are also overlooked. While the ending is satisfactory it fails to address some of the major illegal issues that the teens have found themselves in. Still it's a great read and an equally great conversation starter on the dangers of addiction even in the gaming industry.

Not a fan until page 264,and then WHAM, couldn't put it down.

По-скоро детска книга за компютърна игра, която по тайнствен и мистериозен начин e свързана с реалния живот. Първата половина е доста скучна и почти нищо не се случва, във втората има малко действие, но като цяло може би трябва да си дете за да я харесаш.

More like a 3.75 .

I have to say that the two novels of Ursula Poznanski that I've read really convinced me. They weren't excellent or something, but they sure as hell were entertaining af!

I really enjoyed that Erebos picked up speed pretty early on. I couldn't put it down once Nick started the game. I constantly was at the edge of my seat.

The story was interesting. The ending was similar to the story in Saeculum , which I liked. But I hope that it's not a pattern in all of Poznanski's novels because it would become too obvious after a while. But the one thing that bothered me a little bit here was that there was no foreshadowing. At least not much. We had some foreshadowing in Saeculum , but here there was nothing. At least not that I can recall. And I just finished it.
But hey, it's just a small rant of an otherwise pretty good novel.

The characters were alright. Nothing too special but fitting to the story.
The writing was alright as well.

Overall I really liked it. I had a fun day with it and I'm looking forward to reading more of Ursula Poznanski.

Ten konec se mi zamlouval nejvíc! :)
