I found Erebos by Ursula Poznanski to be a suspenseful fiction story that combines mystery with adventure. The main theme is probably Reality vs. a virtual world when Nick Dunmore, the main character, begins to have his normal life greatly affected from a game with a conscience. He notices many of his classmates disappearing before receiving a mysterious game that only gives one chance, seems to know many things about reality, and holds strict rules. Showing no fear, he delves deeper into the game until he is asked to perform a task in real life. He carries out the seemingly harmless request and continues on. After he obeys countless of the game's requests, his character finally dies. Still dealing with addictions to the game, he meets up with a girl called Emily who leads him to an eccentric man dubbed Victor where they work together to solve the game's identity and objective. Erebos was interesting because of the mystery and adventure aspects. I agree with the author that games are quite addicting and can cause clouded decisions, however not all games are without a plus. The book raises the issue of games taking over lives, but it disregards the mindset and tolerance of teens in the future. This definitely cautioned me to stay cautious of games. I would probably recommend it to fans of mystery and fantasy books.
