Interesting book that made me think of different types of literacy (particularly critical literacy) in nuanced ways not previously considered. I really enjoyed the voice and the writing style. For me, though, the book went in depth in a literary critic perspective that was a bit too esoteric for me.

As someone who admittedly spent most of 2020 “diversifying my reading list,” and doing the same at my librarian job, the concept of this book really snagged me. If you (like me) read books by & about people unlike you to learn about those people, yet read books by & about authors like you just for entertainment, give this book a go. Castillo takes us through “reading for empathy” and the “expected reader.” You may be familiar with these but I recommend this deep dive to all reading lovers.

A book filled with the most loving, tender rage. I felt many, many pangs at her words. How have not yet read America is Not the Heart
I wish everything interrogated the world as intensely as this does.
Also — and this is a new opinion for me — fuck Joan Didion.

Essential reading for all readers and writers and people of the world. Elaine Castillo is whip-smart, funny, and heartfelt in her explorations of how we can begin to read (and think and speak and listen) more wholly, honestly, and with presence.
I listened to the audiobook as I read and that really helped me focus! I recommend it if you sometimes have trouble staying focused with nonfiction.
