The whole thing is rather ridiculous and all the characters are rather annoying and equally ridiculous - which, admittedly, is kind of the point. I freely admit I found them rather more irritating than endearing - which, again... Kind of the whole point - and I almost gave up on the book at least four times.
But I stuck it out, and the last three hours or so (I was listening to the audiobook version) we're a marked improvement. Still ridiculous, mind, but in a slightly less annoying way and the story totally had me chuckling several times.
Will I read the next book if there is one? Probably not, but I will say that it was a fun, mostly entertaining read made more so by how it not only failed to take itself seriously, but tossed almost all seriousness to the wind and embraced the ridiculousness. Kind of like if the 80s-era Flash Gordon movie was written as a fairy tale to an amusing Not Quite Happy Ever After

Very cute, very funny. Overall a nice little book and a very quick read (although it's like 300 pages...)
Reread! Although I'm not sure when I read it the first time.. I also did finish this like two weeks ago so my memory has already lapsed a bit.
I really enjoyed this! I found that the story was funny and interesting and kept my attention throughout the entire thing. I really enjoyed the subversion of cliches and the twists and turns that Christopher Healy included in this story. I would really love to continue this series as I had only read the first book in the past. I don't really have much more to add other than I enjoyed it, and if you want a fun read to take your mind off of things, this is perfect.

Probably the best audio I have heard as far as voicing of distinct, entertaining voices go. Bronson Pinchot does an amazing job!
The story itself was clever and entertaining. I think kids would enjoy it. I had to push myself a bit to finish it. I think the story did not grab me. I was in the mood for something a bit different. But it was still fun and I will recommend to my students.
