It insists upon itself. It’s trying to create a nonlinear flashback narrative and all it does is confuse the reader. the writing is not bad but it is full of details that do not pertain to the story. I didn’t finish the book, more or less couldn’t.

I wish there were half stars. I would actually give this 3 1/2 stars. Some parts were really great - interesting and intriguing. Some of the characters were thinly drawn to me. As they aged they just became one-dimensional which disappointed me.

Tragic, but beautifully written.

What got to me most about this story was the inability of any of the family members to say what they really wanted to say.

Mom and Dad in the story each have their own separate issues. Mom wanted to be a doctor but due to marriage and child-rearing was unable to. Dad, a Chinese American, remembers never being fully accepted. Both Focus their complete attention on the middle child Lydia. Each send conflicting messages. Mom says "Stand Out. Stand out", while Dad says, "Fit in. Fit in."

The oldest son is virtually ignored while the youngest daughter is almost hidden.

The book is the study of love and loss and how a family tries to stay together after a tragedy occurs.

Highly recommended
