This book hit me so hard. There were so many different issues that the author dealt with, which I usually am not a fan of, but it was just put together so well. I kept having to remind myself of the setting, though, because of the social issues in this time period. All of the characters were so real; they had so many flaws but they were so realistic and relatable. I honestly can't even completely explain my feelings towards this book, but it was just truly amazing. Beautifully written and put together perfectly.

I absolutely hated reading this. I don't even know why. I loved Little Fires Everywhere. But there's something about this book that was so hard to read. The three stars are because it's an objectively good book, and I really loved the ending. I wish I had loved the book more than I did, but it's alright. Not a great reading weekend for me though.
Also, I worry that my mood might have bled into my reading of this book, so I don't know. Hopefully, I'm not misjudging it.

I think my favourite and least favourite character in this book is James. He's such a complex character, which is funny because when people say "He is a complex person", what they really mean is, "He is an asshole". But this time I REALLY mean he is a complex person in the sense that so many of his decisions in life are driven by his own insecurities and societally inflicted trauma. This book was eye opening for me in the sense that I finally really understood the grey areas between a person's actions and the circumstances that led to their decisions. At the end of the day, we can say certain actions are deplorable, but to say an entire person is horrible is a much harder judgement to make.

This is definitely not a feel-good read. Overall very sad but well done take on the ties that bind.
