I feel like it's one of those books that just feel so long and are so hard to get through but then the last 50 pages are amazing. I struggled to find motivation to pick this book back up at some points solely because it was so slow. I feel like part of my problem with it as well was that I struggled to connect with the characters, especially the MC. I just found he was whiny for most of the book or just had this "everyone please feel sorry for me" complex that made it extremely difficult for me to enjoy the story. The original Arthur Louis Pullman is the only non annoying character, and one of the things I liked about this book was piecing together his life as the MC collects "clues" about him - which is also why I loved the ending so much (bringing this review up probably by an entire star).
I liked that in the end we learned of this massive component of his life, and pretty much learn why he was the way he was (also so glad we learned he was not faking having Alzheimers and was in fact actually dead - probably would've further ruined the entire book for me)
. Also, this is totally not Miller's fault but I was told this book was gonna make me cry and my eyes were as dry as the dessert the entire time so kinda disappointing.

Read for my Library Materials for Young Adults class.
I really do not understand how this book got so many starred reviews from journals. The way that you can tell every moment that this book is written by a straight man...yikes. The plot is so all over the place with strings that don't go anywhere. I think the most frustrating part is the twist at the end which I will spoil because sexuality isn't a plot twist, but in this book, it's used as a huge plot twist that actually the grandpa was gay the whole time and wasn't writing these love "poems" for this other woman or for anyone in his family, but actually for his male lover. It was just...so unnecessary and felt kind of gross to use it for shock value and to then talk about how that may mean he didn't truly love his family...again I say, yikes. And to make the one black character the big bad villain...sir, please. By far the worst book I've read in a long time and the first book I've given one star in years. I will not be reading any more of Miller's works, and I will not be recommending his books.

Believe me this book is worth every page. It’s written wonderfully, shocking, heart provoking, and simply beautiful. The story, the writing, themes, morals, poems littered through the book, all just as beautiful as the cover. The cover is the reason I grabbed this book and sometimes judging a book by it’s cover is more beneficial than the saying implies. I beg anyone looking for something to read to give this book your time. You won’t regret it.

I sort of DNF along the way.

4.5 stars (I wish we could put a half-star).

"i always felt there was some Greater love waiting for me,
just around the bend of the orange horizon,
i'm learning now that the world is a circle, & what i thought
was ahead of me is actually behind.
but my eyes are open,
& i can see that i'm coming up on it again."

I loved this book. With beautiful, thought-provoking poetry and complex character paired with an interesting plot and heartbreaking mystery, this book is a true tear-jerker. I love how the author just describes everything so beautifully; I can just picture it all in my head with ease. It was smart and witty, drawing in on real life to create this totally believable and not so fictional world (please don't judge but I did have to google to see if A World Away was an actual book). As you go on this journey with Arthur, you meet a wide cast of characters that all have heartbreaking, funny and diverse tales to tell of their own as you slowly piece together the mystery of Arthur's grandfather.
