A breezy ode to When Harry Met Sally. The relationship feels real, but the supporting characters feel underdeveloped. It’s totally enjoyable, but forgettable.
Admittedly, I did not have high expectations for this book because I think I was the only person on the planet not completely enamored by Beach Read, but, I loooove friends to lovers so I was really excited!
I want to start by saying I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the banter. I find it difficult to get into book rom coms because banter is so hard to execute effectively, but, I quite enjoyed it. I also really liked Poppy’s career — and the ultimate ‘lily pad’ she jumps to in the end. Career angst / figuring it out is portrayed so well here. I also think Emily Henry is a good writer.
But... I just don’t think I mesh well with Emily Henry’s characters. I struggled with this in Beach Read too, but I didn’t really find Poppy or Alex compelling. I feel like it’s a bit essential to root for characters in rom-coms. I’m not even sure how to describe it but there’s something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on, and it’s how I felt when I read her last book too.
I did like this one a lot more, and their chemistry is much more believable. But, I found Poppy to be a bit judgemental, especially in how she describes the people she meets on her various trips — which is a bit ??? considering that’s the aspect she supposedly loves the most. I did enjoy the flashback structure, but, I was a bit jarred by the first one, because it’s a trick, and I find that a very weird way to drop readers into a book.
Also, I found her speech at the end boring. And after spending 85% of the book hinting at this big explosion from 2 years ago, I felt kind of let down by it just being a kiss? I found that really anti climatic tbh.
There was also something that made me really mad but I forgot to write it down and now I can't remember what it was RIP - but I have a feeling it was the whole vasectomy plot, idk I find that weird, and how Emily Henry tried to justify it didn't make into this romantic notion for me it just made me uncomfortable lol.
Anyway, I found it an engaging read, and there were some great one-liners about loneliness. There was a moment in the book where Poppy (I think) says something about how good writing makes you feel something (I need to keep better track of shit for reviews but it's in there somewhere) — and I just felt very indifferent about this book.
Ultimately, it didn’t move me, and I enjoyed it enough to keep reading, but whatever missing element I have with Emily Henry’s writing just makes it hard to describe this book in any other way then: forgettable.

As someone who LOVED Funny Story, Book Lovers, and Happy Place, I would say this was the weakest Emily Henry I have read so far (have not picked up Beach Read yet).
(Mild spoilers ahead)
The writing is good, the story is charming, the characters are well developed, and the banter is, of course, impeccable. But this one just didn't do it for me. You're telling me these two couldn't figure out their attraction and communicate for over a DECADE? Also, I'm a sucker for the formula Henry's other books seem to follow, where there is a kiss or something early on and the attraction builds in intensity as the book progresses. These two didn't get their first kiss until about 2/3 through the book, immediately followed by the third act breakup.
Also, Alex is a painfully insecure guy (and WHY? He's hot and successful??) so I didn't find him a very appealing love interest personally.
Still, the ending was incredibly sweet, and I loved that they did eventually learn to communicate and work on themselves.
I would still certainly recommend this, but it wasn't my favorite. 90% friends, 5% lovers.
