I requested this one because although I had heard of the Baltimore plot, I had never heard of lady spies involvement in it. Often history is told from men's perspectives and we hear less of the many skills and accomplishments of women. I loved that we got to see a whole division of women spies and their many successful operations in this book. I feel the time jumps were a little jarring and made the book drag a little bit, it took me awhile to finish this one. I did loved the whole story told and how much I learned, and the art and layout was really eye catching. Overall there is something for everyone in this one.

This was a nice look into the real history of the female agent Kate Warne who saved President Lincoln's life before the Civil War. A fascinating, interesting, and strong woman who made her own way in the world and left her important mark on history.
But the bouncing around with the timeline just made things confusing a bit. And there were times, it felt that things should have been fleshed out better and explained better. Also with the drawings, sometimes everyone looked the same, so it was hard to tell who was who.
Still a lot of historical fun.

I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I thought this was an okay read. I liked learning more about Kate Warne and all she went through to become a detective. The art was well done and I could mostly tell what was happening during any action scenes. I thought it was an interesting choice to focus on Kate Warne and Mrs. Lincoln. I know some of it was fictionalize, but all in all, I would recommend this to anyone interested in Kate Warne.

'Better Angels: A Kate Warne Adventure' by Jeff Jensen with art by George Schall is a graphic novel that tells the true story of a woman detective that saved Abraham Lincoln's life.
Kate Warne convinces Allan Pinkerton to hire her as a detective because she is a woman and women at this time in history were largely ignored and could make excellent spies. Kate builds her group of detectives, then is brought to Baltimore to spy on a plot to assassinate newly elected President Lincoln in an attempt by the confederates to replace the US president with Jefferson Davis, a confederate one.
This is a rip-roaring story once it gets going. Part of the problem is that it moves back and forth in time a bit and that is confusing. Amazing art by George Schall has a lithographic/daguerreotype style of the time this story takes place. It is a really good read and tells of a little known woman in history that should be better known.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from BOOM! Studios, Archaia, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I am not really overly knowledgeable in the history of the USA, I know the basics but it’s still a strange country quite far away…

This took me forever to read. But, the story was really great and I loved that there were so many women doing jobs that would be typically done by men in that day and age. I really enjoyed the story but the artwork wasn’t my favorite. It wasn’t bad, the style just wasn’t something I liked. Overall though, this was a fun graphic novel and I would like to read more stories set in this universe.
