The rampant misogyny bummed me out quite a bit :) And that's not just as a plot device or applied to "the bad guys", but totally inherent in the writing itself, the characterisation of the main character, and the author's voice. In fact, the book tries very hard to be feminist, but paradoxically, that in itself might be why it utterly fails to do so.
If (I don't know how many) millennia into the future we're still making any sort of gender distinction, I'd honestly wish humanity goes extinct sooner rather than later.
Of course, this is the first Asimov I've ever read. He might redeem himself as I read more.

Wow, this just went from 4-4.25 to 4.75 in the last 4 chapters, this is why love Asimov so much. The plot is just so clever and so brilliantly executed, and i loved the characters in this book. Harry and Dors are adorable, i really loved their interactions. I knew something was fishy with Humman from the start, and i was really thrown off when he(as we learnt) said to the emperor that he sent those thugs. The fact that he was the advisor was the first wtf moment, but i kinda was expecting it, but the fact that he was THE Daneel Oliva was HOLY SHIT WTF moment that i absolutely loved, and Dors twist was just a cherry on top after that, such a beautiful plot that makes a lot of sense but you never see twists coming

I've not read much Asimov and none of the Foundation series. Time to remedy that. This was excellent - an engaging portrait of Hari Seldon, who seems to figure as a major character in the main Foundation books. Despite having been written in the 1980s, this felt very timely with our current world, as all good science fiction often does. Having not read the Foundation series, I can't compare this to the others, but if they're anything like this, I'm looking forward to reading them.
You can tell that this book was written in a much different time than the original series was written. The story flows different (better in my opinion) The conversations are more real and not as stilted. It's a bit of a bridge between old scifi and new.
I enjoyed this as much as some of the original trilogy and the books that followed and much more than others.
The actual plot of the story was exactly as I figured, and it was fine enough. If you like the other Foundation Series plots, you will like this one.
What I really liked was the telling of the story. There was a significant change in the action and a lot of political intrigue that I really enjoyed. The book touches a lot on socioeconomics and prejudices, and they play part in the plot as well.
There was even some humor, which the previous books lacked.
